The first order of business to set up the shop was to survey the space. I went around measuring the different features of the room with a tape measure to get as many dimensions as I could. The data was recoded in my notebook as shown below.
Doing a survey like this makes the very crude assumption that the walls are square. From the measurements I took the overall room isn’t square but for the next step I rounded down to the shortest dimension to assume a square room. With the recoded data I made a 2D sketch of the basement in Rhino 3D. Now I have a fully dimensioned model that will allow me to quickly iterate through different workshop layouts.
